Before You Press Record
The useful questions are usually about slipping, shadows and what to substitute. Start here, then return to the guide for your particular photograph.
Which build is the best starting point?
Start with a low folded-card cradle on a broad tray. It teaches stability and framing without suspending the phone. Follow the support guide and begin with a stationary subject.
Can tape hold a phone overhead?
Do not use tape as primary overhead retention. Use a suitable mechanical phone holder and an independent tether secured to a sound anchor. Tape may help position padding, but adhesive performance changes with heat, dust and surface texture. See the overhead checks.
How much weight can a homemade rig carry?
These designs have no certified load rating. Materials, joints and geometry vary. Use suitable rated equipment when you cannot confidently assess the setup. A successful dummy test can reveal obvious problems but cannot certify a structure.
Why is only part of my macro image sharp?
Close focus can produce a very thin depth of field. Keep the subject parallel to the camera, stabilise both and change distance in small steps. If the edges remain smeared while the centre looks sharp, the added lens may be the limiting factor. Read the macro guide.
Can I use a water droplet as a macro lens?
This site does not recommend it. Liquid near camera openings and seams creates unnecessary risk. Use a dry, intact lens in a padded holder. Do not assume a water-resistance claim makes deliberately wetting the camera a sensible experiment.
What can I use instead of a bought diffuser?
Start with window light and white bounce card. A plain translucent sheet in a separate freestanding frame can diffuse a suitable cool LED light, but must remain clear of the fixture and its vents. Never cover a hot bulb. Follow the diffusion walkthrough.
Why do I see dark bands under an LED lamp?
Some LEDs flicker in a way that interacts with the camera exposure or video frame rate. Try daylight or another suitable light. If available, test the camera anti-flicker setting and inspect the result. Dimming can change the behaviour, so check again after adjusting brightness.
Should I charge the phone while recording?
Begin testing without a charging cable. Charging can add heat and cables can pull the rig. If charging is necessary, follow the device instructions and stop if temperature warnings appear. Do not cover the phone or place a power bank where it can fall onto the scene.
Can these methods reproduce exact product colours?
Not reliably without a controlled colour workflow. Avoid mixed light, use consistent settings and do not present this improvised setup as calibrated colour reproduction. Screens and viewing conditions introduce further differences.
What should I do if the rig moves during a test?
Remove the phone and stop. Identify sliding, flexing or loose joints before trying again. Shorten or lower the structure, improve the support or use suitable commercial equipment. Do not disguise a weak joint with extra tape and continue filming.
